The Soushen ji 搜神記 (Records of Enquiry about the Spirits) was a Chinese text written by Gan Bao 干竇. The text is now lost, but there are several reconstructions available with the amount of chapters varying from 1 to 20.

Bits of information[]

Gan Bao, was a Jin dynasty historian who lived from c. 315 - 336 and is widely considered to be the author of Soushen ji. His official biography in History of Jin, chapter 82 also acknowledges Gan Bao as the author of Soushen ji and says that Gan Bao showed a manuscript of it to Liu Tan 劉惔, who said: "you should be called the Dong Hu of ghosts."

Liu Tan was a Jin dynasty literary man of great renown. Dong Hu 董狐 was praised by Confucius for solving the murder of Duke Ling 灵公 of Jin in the seventh century BC.

There are various reconstructions available of this book, and these usually consist of 464 stories.

  1. 干竇《搜神記》曰:宋大夫邢史子臣明於天道,周敬王之三十七年,景公問曰:「天道其何祥?」對曰:「後五年五月丁亥,臣將死;死後五年五月丁卯,吳將亡;亡後五年,君將終;終後四百年,邾王天下。」俄而皆如其言。所云邾王天下者,謂魏之興也。邾,曹姓,魏亦曹姓,皆邾之後。其年數則錯,未知邢史失其數邪,將年代久遠,注記者傳而有謬也?

  1. 《搜神記》曰:初,漢元、成之世,先識之士有言曰,魏年有和,當有開石於西三千餘里,繫五馬,文曰「大討曹」。及魏之初興也,張掖之柳谷,有開石焉,始見於建安,形成於黃初,文備於太和,周圍七尋,中高一仞,蒼質素章,龍馬、麟鹿、鳳皇、仙人之象,粲然咸著,此一事者,魏、晉代興之符也。至晉泰始三年,張掖太守焦勝上言,以留郡本國圖校今石文,文字多少不同,謹具圖上。按其文有五馬象,其一有人平上幘,執戟而乘之,其一有若馬形而不成,其字有「金」,有「中」,有「大司馬」,有「王」,有「大吉」,有「正」,有「開壽」,其一成行,曰「金當取之」。

  1. 《搜神記》曰:崑崙之墟,有炎火之山,山上有鳥獸草木,皆生於炎火之中,故有火浣布,非此山草木之皮枲,則其鳥獸之毛也。漢世西域舊獻此布,中間久絕;至魏初,時人疑其無有。文帝以為火性酷烈,無含生之氣,著之典論,明其不然之事,絕智者之聽。及明帝立,詔三公曰:「先帝昔著典論,不朽之格言,其刊石於廟門之外及太學,與石經並,以永示來世。」至是西域使至而獻火浣布焉,於是刊滅此論,而天下笑之。

  1. 《搜神記》曰:策欲渡江襲許,與吉俱行。時大旱,所在熇厲。策催諸將士使速引船,或身自早出督切,見將吏多在吉許,策因此激怒,言:「我為不如于吉邪,而先趨務之?」便使收吉。至,呵問之曰:「天旱不雨,道塗艱澀,不時得過,故自早出,而卿不同憂戚,安坐船中作鬼物態,敗吾部伍,今當相除。」令人縛置地上暴之,使請雨,若能感天日中雨者,當原赦,不爾行誅。俄而雲氣上蒸,膚寸而合,比至日中,大雨總至,溪澗盈溢。將士喜悅,以為吉必見原,並往慶慰。策遂殺之。將士哀惜,共藏其尸。天夜,忽更興雲覆之;明旦往視,不知所在。案《江表傳》、《搜神記》于吉事不同,未詳孰是。
  2. 《搜神記》曰:策既殺于吉,每獨坐,彷彿見吉在左右,意深惡之,頗有失常。後治創方差,而引鏡自照,見吉在鏡中,顧而弗見,如是再三,因撲鏡大叫,創皆崩裂,須臾而死。

  2. 《搜神記》曰:吳以草創之國,信不堅固,邊屯守將,皆質其妻子,名曰保質。童子少年,以類相與嬉遊者,日有十數。永安二年三月,有一異兒,長四尺餘,年可六七歲,衣青衣,來從群兒戲,諸兒莫之識也。皆問曰:「爾誰家小兒,今日忽來?」答曰:「見爾群戲樂,故來耳。」詳而視之,眼有光芒,爚爚外射。諸兒畏之,重問其故。兒乃答曰:「爾惡我乎?我非人也,乃熒惑星也。將有以告爾:三公鉏,司馬如。」諸兒大驚,或走告大人,大人馳往觀之。兒曰:「舍爾去乎!」竦身而躍,即以化矣。仰面視之,若引一匹練以登天。大人來者,猶及見焉,飄飄漸高,有頃而沒。時吳政峻急,莫敢宣也。後五年而蜀亡,六年而晉興,至是而吳滅,司馬如矣。

  1. 《搜神記》曰:恪入,已被殺,其妻在室,使婢,語曰:「汝何故血臰?」婢曰:「不也。」有頃愈劇,又問婢曰:「汝眼目視瞻,何以不常?」婢蹷然起躍,頭至于棟,攘臂切齒而言曰:「諸葛公乃為孫峻所殺!」於是大小知恪死矣,而吏兵尋至。
