Simplified Chinese, officially called jiǎnhuàzì 简化字, but also jiǎntizì 简体字, are Chinese characters standardized for use in the People's Republic of China. Simplified Chinese characters have existed for thousands of years alongside traditional Chinese, but have only been standardized since the 1950's. Old texts from about the Three Kingdoms period and many dynasties thereafter are thus all written in traditional Chinese.
