Meng Yan 孟琰 was General who Supports the Han in the Nanzhong region.

BiographyEdit

Meng Yan is only mentioned in the 4th century works Han-Jin chunqiu 漢晉春秋 by Xi Zuochi and chapter four of the Huayang guo zhi 華陽國志 by Chang Qu.[1] These works have been cited by Pei Songzhi for his annotated version of the Records of the Three Kingdoms.

Meng Yan was from Zhuti 朱提.[1] Though he originates from the same place and bears the same surname as Meng Huo 孟獲, it remains unclear if these two men were related, but it seems very likely.

In 225 AD Zhuge Liang pacified Nanzhong and made the worthy and competent men of the region officials. Meng Yan was made General who Supports the Han (fǔ Hàn jiāngjūn 輔漢將軍).[1][2]

NotesEdit

  • Meng Yan is mentioned for the first time when Zhuge Liang appoints him as General who Supports the Han, thus he is not mentioned during the pacification campaign itself.
