Gongjin's Campaign Memorials

The Rebellion in Jiaozhi region (Jiāozhǐ zhī luàn 交趾之亂) of 181 AD was started by a group of insurgents led by Liang Long 粱龍. Later that year the Grand Administrator of Lanling commandery Zhu Jun 朱儁 was sent to deal with the rebels.

The Battle[]

For a long time the Wuhu barbarians of Jiaozhi had been making trouble in the commandery and the provincial and commandery officials could do nothing to stop them.[1]

During the late 170’s a certain Liang Long, nicknamed “Dragon Liang” who was probably a chieftain of the Wuhu barbarians of Hepu commandery, decided to make a rebellion.[3] He controlled a large rebel force across the far south of the region and he was joined by the Grand Administrator of Cangwu commandery Chen Shao 陳绍[4] and the Grand Administrator of Nanhai commandery Kong Zhi 孔芝.[5] Together they attacked and occupied several commanderies and counties.[3]

An edict appointed Zhu Jun of Kuaiji commandery in Yang Province from Prefect of Lanling to become Inspector of Jiaozhi commandery. Having the authority to raise troops in his home commandery of Kuaiji he took 5.000 men and headed southwards. Zhu Jun held back at the provincial borderlines and sent some agents to spy on the rebels and then advanced into the territory. He first killed Chen Shao to show his authority and called up loyal commandery troops to support his advance. The local officials were encouraged, the people turned to him and the insurgents surrendered. Within a few weeks the trouble was ended and Liang Long had been executed. Because of his good work Zhu Jun was enfeoffed as Marquis of a Chief Commune and was summoned to court as Grandee Remonstrant and Consultant.[1][2]

Notes[]

  • Jiaozhi was at this time just a region and not a province. It later became Jiao Province (Jiaozhou 交州).
